Goods and Services Tax
Goods and Services Tax
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based tax that is levied on every value addition in India. It is designed to replace multiple indirect taxes like VAT, service tax, excise duty, and others, making it a single, unified tax structure that simplifies the business process.
GST is levied on the supply of goods and services, and the key principle is that the final consumer bears the tax burden while the businesses collect and remit taxes to the government. GST operates under a system of tax credit, ensuring that businesses can set off the tax paid on inputs against the tax charged on output, thereby reducing cascading taxes.
Types of GST:
- CGST (Central GST): Levied by the Central Government on intra-state transactions.
- SGST (State GST): Levied by the State Government on intra-state transactions.
- IGST (Integrated GST): Levied on inter-state transactions, collected by the Central Government.
